Job Description

 We are seeking five skilled Physician Assistants specializing in General Surgery for a 10-day locum tenens assignment in New York. This opportunity, starting on 01/02/2026, involves working 12-hour shifts from 7a-7p at a hospital. The ideal candidates will have experience in ambulatory or surgical practice, with OR or PACU experience being helpful. Flexibility in shift scheduling is essential, as assignments may change based on patient and facility needs. The role focuses on comprehensive pre-operative care, including patient assessments, risk evaluations, and surgical clearance coordination. Responsibilities include conducting thorough pre-operative examinations, managing perioperative risks, and ensuring patients are optimally prepared for surgery.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Perform comprehensive pre-operative history and physical examinations

Review patient medical, surgical, anesthesia, and medication histories

Order and interpret pre-operative labs, EKGs, imaging, and other tests

Conduct anesthesia risk screening (ASA classification, airway assessments, STOP-BANG, etc.)

Manage and adjust medications per pre-operative guidelines

Coordinate with anesthesia, surgery, and primary care for risk mitigation and clearance

Perform point-of-care testing and basic airway and cardiopulmonary assessments

Administer vaccines, medications, and TB skin tests

Ensure surgical readiness by verifying clearances, test results, and documentation

Communicate identified risks or concerns to anesthesia and surgical teams

Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions for higher-risk patients

Document evaluations, risk assessments, and plans in the medical record

Apply evidence-based pre-operative guidelines and follow hospital protocols

Support quality and safety initiatives related to perioperative care

Provide patient education on perioperative instructions and medication management


Additional Information:

New York state license required

Experience in ambulatory or surgical practice required

OR or PACU experience preferred

Flexibility in shift scheduling is crucial

Proficiency in Allscripts EMR system preferred
