Job Description

We are seeking a Neurology Nurse Practitioner for a 10-day locum tenens assignment in New York, starting Jan 2, 2026. This position is based at a Stroke Center and involves a flexible schedule of 12-hour day and night shifts. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing acute neurological emergencies and working collaboratively within a hospital setting.

  • Schedule: 12-hour shifts with a mix of days (7a-7p) and nights (7p-7a); providers may be reassigned based on coverage needs and must demonstrate flexibility

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Manage stroke patients and respond to stroke codes
  • Administer IV medications and manage medication drips
  • Write admission and discharge orders under attending supervision
  • Perform advance care planning and obtain consent
  • Conduct arterial blood gas determination and arterial punctures for ABG
  • Draw blood, perform phlebotomy, and venipuncture
  • Insert and replace feeding and nasogastric tubes
  • Insert Foley catheters and venous lines; remove drains and central venous pressure devices
  • Change surgical and non-surgical dressings; staple and suture insertion/removal
  • Perform and interpret EKGs
  • Order and interpret imaging studies (CT, MRI, MRA, CTA, Carotid, ECHO)
  • Order and reconcile medications and laboratory work
  • Monitor vital signs; initiate CPR and assist in code situations
  • Initiate consultation requests and participate in interdisciplinary rounds
  • Provide patient education and perform bedside swallowing screening
  • Complete pre-operative assessments and instructions
  • Interpret head CT, MRI brain, MRA head, CTA head and neck
  • Assess eligibility for thrombolytic therapy; administer Tenecteplase (TNK)
  • Perform relevant cancer risk assessments for the general population
  • Write daily progress notes and discharge summaries

Additional Information
  • Must be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in New York
  • Flexibility is required for scheduling and shift assignments
  • Experience managing acute neurological emergencies is essential
  • Board certification is not required for this assignment
