Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Dentist for a locum tenens assignment in Georgia starting Sep 15, 2025. This six-month opportunity offers 8-hour day shifts and focuses on providing comprehensive dental care within a correctional facility setting. The assignment is 120 days in length and offers a unique chance to make a difference for a specialized patient population while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform routine dental treatments including examinations, x-rays, fillings, extractions, cleanings, dentures, and root canals
  • Diagnose and develop dental treatment plans for inmates/residents
  • Develop, coordinate, and supervise the dental program, including education on dental disease prevention
  • Recruit, schedule, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate staff
  • Consult with healthcare staff and coordinate specialized or emergency dental care as needed
  • Control and inventory medications, syringes, dental instruments, and supplies according to established procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and enforce sanitation and infection control methods
  • Prepare and maintain dental files, records, reports, and logs accurately and securely
  • Routinely audit dental files for documentation of provided services
  • Monitor and coordinate contract and external dental services
  • Screen and approve/disapprove record requests per policy and procedures
  • Provide input for dental budget and identify financial responsibilities for incurred expenses
  • Complete dental billing logs and assist in billing reviews
  • Evaluate and recommend methods for improving operational efficiency and cost effectiveness
  • Audit pharmacy use and ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, especially for controlled substances
  • Observe and record inmate/resident behavior
  • Maintain and order equipment and supplies, inspect for contraband, and ensure secure storage or disposal
  • Monitor safety requirements and practices; prepare safety and accident reports; respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies
  • Communicate effectively with administration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors, and the public
  • Review, process, and respond to lawsuits; attend court hearings; conduct chart research as needed


Additional Information

  • Must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of correctional custody methods, facility rules, and regulations required
  • At least one year of relevant experience preferred
  • Must be licensed to practice dentistry in Georgia
