Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Psychiatrist for a 10-week locum tenens assignment in Arizona, starting Dec 1, 2025. This role offers a flexible 20-hour-per-week schedule, typically split into two 10-hour shifts per week. The Psychiatrist will provide direct patient care, participate in civil commitment proceedings, and perform comprehensive mental health services in a correctional facility setting.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provide direct psychiatric patient care and associated clinical duties
  • Participate in civil commitment proceedings
  • Assess patients and provide DSM diagnoses as appropriate
  • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications
  • Deliver counseling and disease process education; order and review necessary lab work
  • Supervise and mentor mental health staff within the facility
  • Assess mental health service needs, collect and maintain statistics, and prepare related reports
  • Recommend methods to improve operational efficiency and cost effectiveness of mental health services
  • Accept on-call status as required
  • Provide direct casework services and counseling to inmates/residents and their families (individual, group, and family)
  • Assist in developing and implementing treatment and therapeutic programs for assigned inmates/residents
  • Prepare progress reports and recommendations for discharge plans; assist with case presentations
  • Serve as mental health staff liaison for group counseling, volunteer activities, and events promoting mental health services
  • Assist in the supervision of inmates/residents in facility and community activities; promote positive community relations
  • Maintain confidentiality of inmates/residents and their files; audit and review documentation for completeness
  • Coordinate professional services provided by contract personnel, if applicable
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs
  • Attend staff and group meetings essential for program and service delivery
  • Apply established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures with sound independent judgment
  • Read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, regulations, and legal documents

Additional Information
  • Minimum five years of clinical experience, including two years in a comparable position
  • Must be licensed to practice medicine in Arizona
  • Social security card required for facility clearance
