Responsibilities and Duties
Provide medical services including examinations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for inmates and residents
Prescribe medications and perform both minor and occasional major surgical procedures as needed
Direct and evaluate operations and standards of care within the medical program
Participate in treatment team meetings, devising and reviewing individual health plans
Oversee unit treatment operations and support nursing staff in diagnosis and treatment protocols
Maintain professional relationships with facility, nursing, contract, and external provider staff
Ensure compliance with established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures
Assist in developing and improving facility medical policies
Regularly assess medical services to prevent inappropriate or duplicate care
Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and facilitate early release when clinically appropriate
Closely observe potential catastrophic illnesses among the patient population
Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, reports, and logs
Audit medical files and ensure confidentiality of medical records
Recommend methods for improving operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness
Liaise with outside hospital and agency administrators
Facilitate accreditation processes where applicable
Accept on-call responsibilities as required
Provide health counseling and education individually or in group settings
Clearly communicate responsibilities and accountability to subordinate staff
