Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Family Practice Physician for a locum tenens assignment in California. This 120-day opportunity starts on Dec 1, 2025, and features 8-hour day shifts, Monday through Friday. The physician will provide comprehensive medical care to inmates and residents, contribute to clinical leadership, and support high standards of care within a correctional facility setting.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide medical services including examinations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for inmates and residents
  • Prescribe medications and perform both minor and occasional major surgical procedures as needed
  • Direct and evaluate operations and standards of care within the medical program
  • Participate in treatment team meetings, devising and reviewing individual health plans
  • Oversee unit treatment operations and support nursing staff in diagnosis and treatment protocols
  • Maintain professional relationships with facility, nursing, contract, and external provider staff
  • Ensure compliance with established corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures
  • Assist in developing and improving facility medical policies
  • Regularly assess medical services to prevent inappropriate or duplicate care
  • Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and facilitate early release when clinically appropriate
  • Closely observe potential catastrophic illnesses among the patient population
  • Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, reports, and logs
  • Audit medical files and ensure confidentiality of medical records
  • Recommend methods for improving operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Liaise with outside hospital and agency administrators
  • Facilitate accreditation processes where applicable
  • Accept on-call responsibilities as required
  • Provide health counseling and education individually or in group settings
  • Clearly communicate responsibilities and accountability to subordinate staff
