Responsibilities and Duties
Provide a range of professional medical services, including examinations, diagnoses, prescribing medications, and follow-up care for inmates and residents
Collaborate with the Health Services Supervisor to provide direction and leadership for the medical program
Monitor and review standards of care and operational practices delivered to inmates and residents
Conduct admissions interviews, make clinical rounds, and participate in treatment team meetings to devise, review, and alter individual health plans
Oversee unit treatment operations and provide guidance to nursing specialists in diagnosis, treatment, and prescribing protocols
Perform minor and occasional major surgeries as necessary
Maintain effective working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies
Utilize established policies and procedures while exercising independent judgment in decision-making
Assist in the development of facility medical policies and motivate staff adherence to protocols
Regularly evaluate all medical services for efficiency and to prevent unnecessary duplication
Monitor inpatient hospitalizations and facilitate early releases when clinically appropriate
Closely track potential catastrophic illnesses
Prepare and maintain various records, reports, and logs; audit medical files for documentation completeness
Evaluate and recommend methods to improve operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness of health services
Meet with outside hospital and agency administrators to ensure close working relationships
Support facility accreditation processes where applicable
Maintain on-call status as required
Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences as needed
Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups
Clearly communicate responsibilities, authorities, and accountability to direct subordinates
